ENCORE OF THE MONTH
MARCH, 2019

Nirvana

What can we say. This band are grunge demi gods.  Their impact on the alternative rock scene was absolute. In 1991 their second album 'Nevermind' launched the Seattle Grunge scene to the world. It changed everything. The underground become mainstream. Pearl Jam, Mudhoney, the Smahing Pumpkins, Alice in Chains, Soundgarden and Hole are just a few of the many grunge artists to catch the public's attention. Grunge went global and was being played on mainstream radio everywhere.  Bruce Pavitt, head of record label Sub Pop, is credited as the man to lead the charge. We also think the credit should also go to MTV which was the vehicle that launched 'Smells like teen spirit'.

It was initially expected that 'Nevermind' would sell 250,000 units but within the first month it was selling around 400,000 units a week. There are so many classics on that album but 'Lithium' remains a firm favorite.

Their record label Sub Pop re-released their first Album 'Bleach" which also went on to sell over a million units. 'Blew' was the second single from that album.

If you can't get enough of Nirvana then tune into KROQ FM. We have a love-hate relationship with this LA based alternative rock station but if you are looking for your hit of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, RATM and/or Red Hot Chilli Peppers then this is the station for you.
