The Doors

The Doors are a band that I discovered in the year I was living at College in my first year at University. There was a run down art-house movie theatre playing old cult classics. One of those movies that I had never heard of before was Apocalypse Now. This movie was about the loss of reality and the rapid descent into madness of the soldiers fighting in Vietnam.  'The End' was the song on the soundtrack that captured the essence of the movie. This song spoke to me. When I was in lying in bed trying to get to sleep and escape the college craziness (that was out of control) I would close my eyes and listen to this song. It took me away and I loved it.

Up until that point in my life I had never really heard of the Doors. What a discovery it was. Jim Morrison, the band's lead singer, had a voice. When he let loose on the vocals it was rock-n-roll gold.

The Doors released a lot of albums and they were the first US band to achieve gold LP sales for eight consecutive albums. They have won too many awards to mention and were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame a long time ago.

'Rider of the Storm' is meant to be an autobiological song about Jim Morrison's life. It sounds like it might have been a bumpy ride.

Jim Morrison, like many of his era, died young. He is buried in Paris and his grave is a popular tourist attraction. If you don't know who the Doors are, do yourself a favor, they deserve to be re-discovered. You never know, you might find yourself in Paris.
