Joy Division

Joy Division started off as a punk band, forming after attending a Sex Pistols show.  They quickly transformed their act and pioneered the post punk movement by stripping back their music to the bare bones.  The band only released an EP and two albums before the death of Ian Curtis, the band's lead singer. 'Transmission' was a non album release and was one of the band's biggest songs. Although it was not on the band's debut album 'Unknown Pleasures' it did makes its way on reissue of the album as a bonus song.

The other big song from Joy Division was 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. Like 'Transmission' this song was also a non album release. The song was only included as a bonus track on the reissue of their second album 'Closer'. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' is a song that appears in many of the best-songs-of-all-time lists.  It is a song that haunts the soul. As a fitting tribute to Ian Curtis, 'Love will Tear Us Apart' was inscribed onto his tombstone.

After the death of Ian Curtis the remaining members went on to form techno dance band New Order. 'Blue Monday' is a New Order song about the day the three remaining members of Joy Division learnt that Curtis had died.
