The Pixies

The Pixies produced two of the greatest albums of all time. Their first album 'Surfer Rosa' grabbed the attention of a new generation of musicians and it spawned a wave of bands that became the grunge movement. The musical genius behind the group was front man Charles Thompson IV - better known as Black Francis. He pioneered the slow-and-quiet for the verse, and hard-and-loud for the chorus style of songwriting. 'Tame' is a great example of the format that took the world by storm.

'Gigantic' was the only single from 'Surfer Rosa' and it was sung by the band's bassist, Kim Deal who went on to form the Breeders.

'Monkey Gone to Heaven' was the first single from the Pixies' second album 'Doolittle' and it rocks.

'Here Comes Your Man' is the second single from 'Doolittle' and is a song that the band rarely played live.

'Debaser' was one of my favorite songs from the band's second album and it is classic Pixies in every way.

The influence of this band can not be over stated. They inspired everyone from Nirvana through to Radio Head and the Smashing Pumpkins.  Kurt Cobain from Nirvana said in an interview that when he wrote 'Sounds like Teen Spirit' he was really trying to write a Pixies song.
