The Sonics were a band from the 60s who were punk before there was punk. Everyone from Nirvana, the Hives, to the White Stripes have cited the band as a musical inspiration.'The Witch' is a song with raw energy.
The band's first album '!!!Here are the Sonics!!!' had a bunch of cover songs mixed in with original compositions. It is the songs penned by Gerry Roslie, the band's lead singer, that really grab your attention. 'Psycho' is a great example of the simplicity of this band's sound.
The band's music was stripped back to the basics and their music is considered to be the foundations of the garage rock genre.
The Sonics were a band ahead of their time with a little bit of an aggressive edge that did not exist at the time. It is no surprise they help shaped the punk rock sound of bands like the Stooges who were to follow in their footsteps
'Boss Hog' is another song from the band that shook the musical landscape.
Musically, the Sonics were a band that stripped it back to simple cord progressions with an aggressive tone. In a world of over-produced music this band offers a lot to learn.
